Limestone gives a home a warm, timeless feel – but it’s one of the softer, more porous natural stones. It absorbs spills easily, reacts to acids, and its texture holds on to dirt. The right routine keeps it looking its best for years.
Everyday cleaning, step by step
Keep grit off the floor
Sweep or vacuum regularly with a soft brush. Limestone is softer than most stone, so grit underfoot wears and scratches it quickly – entrance mats make a big difference.
Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner
Dilute a cleaner made for natural stone in warm water. Avoid washing-up liquid and multi-surface sprays, which leave a film that holds dirt in limestone’s texture.
Mop damp, not wet
Limestone is porous, so a flooded floor can take moisture – and dirt – deep into the stone. A well wrung-out mop is all you need.
Dry off and check for spills
Finish with a dry mop or towel, and deal with any spills straight away before they soak in.
What to avoid
- Anything acidic – vinegar, lemon, limescale removers and many bathroom cleaners will etch limestone.
- Bleach and harsh degreasers – they can strip the sealer and discolour the stone.
- Scrubbing brushes and abrasive powders – limestone scratches easily.
- Oily and coloured spills left to sit – limestone absorbs them, and they can leave dark stains.
Why limestone goes dark over time
Many limestone floors gradually darken or look patchy, especially in kitchens and hallways. That’s usually dirt and residue that has worked into the surface and grout lines, and a worn sealer letting spills soak in. Everyday cleaning can’t reach it – but a professional deep clean, followed by resealing, can take a surprising amount of that darkening away and bring back the stone’s original colour.
