Marble brings real elegance to a home, but it’s softer than most people expect. Over time it scratches, dulls and marks – and no amount of mopping brings the shine back. The good news is that marble can almost always be restored.
Why marble loses its shine
Marble is a calcium-based stone, so it’s softer than granite or porcelain and it reacts to acids. Everyday grit scratches the surface, furniture leaves scuffs, and spills like wine, fruit juice or acidic cleaners leave dull etch marks. Once the surface is scratched or etched it no longer reflects light evenly – which is why marble can look dull even when it’s perfectly clean.
How marble restoration works
Deep clean
We remove dirt, old sealers and product build-up, so we’re working on the stone itself rather than whatever’s sitting on top of it.
Honing out scratches
Diamond pads grind back a very fine layer of the surface to remove scratches, etch marks and uneven wear – starting coarse enough to take out the damage, then working progressively finer.
Polishing
Finer and finer diamonds bring the marble back up to the finish you want, from a soft honed matt to a high-gloss polish.
Sealing
An impregnating sealer helps the marble resist stains from oils and spills, giving you more time to wipe them up.

Why it’s a job for professionals
DIY polishing kits and “marble restorer” products usually leave a coating on top rather than restoring the stone, and it’s easy to create uneven patches or dig in with the wrong abrasive. Getting an even, consistent finish across a whole floor takes the right machines, the right diamonds and experience of how different marbles behave.
What can’t be fixed?
Deep chips and cracks need filling or tile replacement rather than polishing, and some old, deep-set stains may lighten rather than disappear completely. We’ll always be upfront about what’s realistic for your floor during the survey.
